<image:caption>2026 Events We hope to see you all next week at Como Park for the 14th Annual Celebration of the Gift of the Cherry Trees at Como Park! Come to our grove of cherry trees near the Mannheimer Memorial (search: "Butterfly Parking Lot" on Maps), to join SPNSCC for: Cherry Blossom Crafts Japanese Games Awards presented to our "When will the Cherry Trees Bloom?" winners Free, family-friendly, and open to the public! When: Saturday, May 2nd Where: Cherry Tree Grove, near the Mannheimer Memorial, Como Park, 1237-1231 Kaufman Dr, St Paul, MN 55103 To help prepare materials for Cherry Tree, contact JoAnn at jab229 AT gmail DOT com. History In 2012, the 100th anniversary of the gift of cherry trees to Washington, DC, the Japanese government generously donated groups of twenty cherry trees to thirty-six American cities. St. Paul was chosen in large part because of the almost 60 year history of being sister city with Nagasaki. Bill Pesek, SPNSCC board member and landscape architect with the Parks and Recreation Department, arranged for them to be planted near the Mannheimer Memorial in Como Park, beginning to tie the Global Harmony Labyrinth, the restored lily pond, and the Charlotte Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden together. The trees were planted and dedicated on June 9, 2012. Honored guests included Ichiro Sawada, Deputy Consul from Chicago, Representative Betty McCollum, plus city council members, former Mayor George Latimer, and Mayor Coleman. Sansei Yonsei Kai performed two sakura dances. Leo Hansen performed the shakuhachi flute at the ceremony and guests greeted at the Japanese Garden by western flute player Ryusuke Jono.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ordway Gardens: A Japanese Collection - The Ordway Gardens: A Japanese Collection</image:title>
<image:caption>The Ordway Gardens: A Japanese Collection The Ordway Gardens, previously known as the Como Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden, is a lasting memorial to the friendship between the city of Nagasaki, Japan, and Saint Paul. It was endowed by the Ordway family in memory of their mother Charlotte Ordway, and designed by Masami Matsuda, a ninth-generation Japanese gardener. The original design for the garden was a gift from the city of Nagasaki in the 1970’s. The garden is landscaped in the Sansui mountain-and-water style and covers an acre. Construction was made possible by donations from the people of Saint Paul and Nagasaki and the hard work of volunteers from both Minnesota and Japan. The Japanese garden you see today is the result of renovations completed in 1991. Renovations included the addition of the tea house and tea house garden. The purpose of the renovations was to create a truly authentic Japanese garden experience. Much of the renovations were overseen by the original designer Masami Matsuda. Matsuda traveled to Minnesota and volunteered his time on four occasions, staying for months to work on the garden with his own hands. Podcast Audio Tour SPNSCC is proud to offer a free podcast audio tour for the garden. The Ordway Japanese Garden Podcast Project was a partnership between the Saint Paul – Nagasaki Sister City Committee (SPNSCC) and the Minnesota Historical Society in 2012 to document the creation Como Japanese Garden. The podcasts served to document key individuals involved in the creation of the garden and SPNSCC’s commitment to the garden as a symbol of the friendship between the cities of Nagasaki, Japan and Saint Paul. Additional stops may be added to the audio in the future. The podcast is available to download free here from the Community Stories website. The Japanese Obon Festival Formerly known as the Japanese Lantern Lighting Festival The Japanese Lantern Lighting Festival provides an opportunity to visit the garden at night lit by traditional Japanese lanterns. The Como Lantern Lighting Festival, presented by SPNSCC and the Japan America Society of Minnesota, is held the third Sunday of August every year and celebrates the Japanese Obon holiday. To learn more about this years’ lantern lighting festival, visit our events page or the Como Park website. Experience a Japanese Tea Ceremony The Como Japanese Garden features a traditional Japanese Tea House. Not normally on display to the public, the tea house may be accessed by visitors when accompanied by a Japanese Garden Volunteer. The tea house is fully function and regularly hosts tea ceremonies during the spring and summer. To learn more about the tea ceremony and sign up for upcoming ceremony presentations, visit the Como Park website. Now Recruiting Volunteers Get Involved with the Garden Today! Are you interested in volunteering at the Ordway Gardens (including the Japanese, meditation, and bonsai gardens) this year? Information and a link to the online application may be found here or call to inquire to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory Volunteer Services – 651-487-8252. The Ordway Gardens: A Japanese collection The Ordway Gardens include a Japanese garden, a meditation garden, interactive educational components and a bonsai display. Learn about the history of Japanese gardens at Como, discover the key elements of a Japanese garden and bonsai, and explore the intricacies of a tea ceremony. Persons completing this training are expected to schedule shifts at least every other week in The Ordway Gardens for the entire season (April-September/October).</image:caption>

<image:caption>From War to Reconciliation: 60 Years of Friendship, 70 Years of Peace between Us 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It also marks the 60th anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Nagasaki, Japan. How do we go from war to peace? From enemies to friends? From despair to resilience? This website is a resource both for events but also curricula and other resources for peace-making. It is a joint venture of Hamline University School of Education, the Saint Paul – Nagasaki Sister City Committee, and World Citizen. Highlights of this anniversary year are the Nagasaki Peace Exhibition, opening August 22, 2015, at Landmark Center in downtown Saint Paul, and the Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard film and display which begins September 19 also at the Landmark Center. Opportunities for teachers to preview the materials will be provided and some bus transportation for student groups to visit the exhibits will be available. Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard exhibit is funded by a grant from the United States – Japan Foundation</image:caption>

Named after a tireless volunteer, the award honors Sam Honda, who worked tirelessly at the Festival of Nations for many years. He could be counted on to jump in and help our committee without complaint. He recruited family members to help as well. He was a member of several other Japan related organizations which helped bridge the Japanese relationships within the Twin Cities. Sam passed away in December 2009, but his memory will live on through this award. Past Recipients 2016 - Mirja Hanson 2011- Mrs. Sam Honda 2010- Sam Honda (posthumously)</image:caption>

<image:caption>This award honors Walter “Chip” Fricke, who became SPNSCC president in 1985 and passed away in 1991. Chip was an action-oriented president and very committed to international friendship. One trip to Nagasaki with Chip, Saint Paul Mayor Jim Scheibel noted that there were no memorials from the United States in the Nagasaki Peace Park. Determined to rectify that omission, he helped to arrange for Paul Granlund’s sculpture, Constellation Earth, to be sent to Nagasaki. In 1993, the Mayor was presented with the first Chip Fricke award for that work. The Fricke award recognizes members and non-members alike who have made significant contributions to international understanding and good will.
